Weekly Spotlight : Insulin Resistance | Endocrinology

In some people, insulin resistance leads to elevated blood glucose, because the body can no longer compensate. This is the stage where prediabetes or diabetes may begin to appear in routine blood sugar tests.

However, in other cases, blood glucose may still appear normal. The pancreas produces extra insulin to keep glucose levels under control. While blood sugar looks “fine,” the body is actually working harder than normal. Over time, this can contribute to fat accumulation in the liver (fatty liver), increased body fat, difficulty losing weight, and metabolic imbalance.

Because of this, relying only on blood sugar results may miss early metabolic problems. Testing insulin levels or assessing insulin resistance can provide earlier insight into how the body is regulating energy and metabolism.

Understanding these signals helps people become more aware of their body’s internal state and take action earlier through lifestyle adjustments, monitoring, and medical guidance.
